Deciding between a fitted cot sheet and a bassinet sheet? We compare sizes, safety, and value to help you choose the right nursery essential for your baby's sleep space.
Quick answer
Choose a fitted bassinet sheet for a compact sleep space (bassinet or change pad) and a fitted cot sheet for a standard crib. The key difference is size—bassinet sheets are smaller and designed for portability, while cot sheets fit full-size crib mattresses.
Size and fit: the main difference
A fitted cot sheet is designed for standard crib mattresses, typically around 28 x 52 inches. A fitted bassinet sheet is smaller, meant for bassinet mattresses that vary in size but are noticeably shorter and narrower. Using the wrong sheet can leave excess fabric that creates a suffocation risk, so matching the sheet to the sleep space is non-negotiable.
Fox & Fallow's bassinet sheets, like the Cypress Organic Fitted Bassinet Sheet, are made with a stretchy organic cotton jersey that hugs smaller mattresses snugly. Their cot sheets, such as the Constellation Organic Fitted Cot Sheet, are sized for full cribs. Always measure your mattress before buying.
Safety considerations
Safe sleep guidelines from pediatricians recommend a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet that stays tight. A bassinet sheet on a crib mattress will be too small and may pop off, while a cot sheet on a bassinet mattress will bunch up. Both scenarios increase the risk of suffocation.
Fox & Fallow's sheets are GOTS and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified (bassinet) or made with organic cotton (cot seconds), so you can trust the materials are free from harmful chemicals. The seconds cot sheet may have minor cosmetic imperfections but is still safe and functional.
Value and longevity
A fitted cot sheet is a longer-term investment because your baby will use a crib for many months or even years. A bassinet sheet is used for a shorter period (typically 3–6 months) before transitioning to a crib. If you're on a budget, consider that you'll need both eventually.
Fox & Fallow offers the Constellation Organic Fitted Cot Sheet as a seconds item at a reduced price (USD 38.97 vs. USD 59.95), which is a great way to save on a high-quality crib sheet if you don't mind minor imperfections. The Cypress bassinet sheet is priced at USD 35.96 and is a new 2026 addition to their range.
Cot sheet vs bassinet sheet: trade-offs at a glance
- Size: Cot sheets fit standard crib mattresses (~28x52 inches). Bassinet sheets fit smaller, varying bassinet mattresses. Measure your mattress before buying—don't guess.
- Duration of use: Cot sheets last through the entire crib stage (months to years). Bassinet sheets are used for 3–6 months until baby transitions to a crib. If buying both, budget for two sets of sheets.
- Material & safety: Both are organic cotton. The bassinet sheet is GOTS/Oeko-Tex certified; the cot sheet (seconds) is organic but may have cosmetic imperfections. Safety is equal—imperfections are only visual, not structural.
- Price & value: The seconds cot sheet costs USD 38.97 (down from USD 59.95). The bassinet sheet costs USD 35.96. Seconds cot sheet offers big savings if you can overlook minor flaws.
